V&B (Alex Jacobs en Ellemieke Schoenmaker)
Artist duo V&B (Alex Jacobs & Ellemieke Schoenmakers, founded in 2007) creates sculptures, paintings and installations. Over the years, they have developed a visual language in which form, material and theme are interwoven in a unique way. They consciously create a dialogue between abstract and figurative, between today's visual culture and the art history of bygone times. These are expressions of an endless curiosity about how images, materials and meanings are constantly evolving.
An important subgenre within V&B's oeuvre consists of works built up from many layers of plaster. Using a variety of techniques involving application, drilling, filling, filing, grinding and sanding, the duo works towards a polished end result. This results in sculptural stones with a smooth skin of bright colours that beg to be looked at and touched. Often with humour and irony, but also from a serious interest, V&B provide artistic commentary on social phenomena.
