Kata Unger
Kata Unger (DE, 1961) weaves contemporary tapestries on a traditional loom, which reflect her view of the world. Although weaving can be a rather rigid process, Unger deliberately leaves room for spontaneity, ‘mistakes’ and flashes of inspiration. A wealth of cultural visual references find their way into her woollen compositions, drawing on history, philosophy and literature, as well as popular culture and various subcultures.
Her exuberant use of colour and references to nature, animals and people are instantly recognisable. Her work responds to sometimes weighty social issues and can also exude a certain dystopian quality. Yet at the same time, the tapestries possess a certain lightness and a playful sense of wonder, giving them a perspective-shifting quality.
