Claus Hugo Nielsen

Claus Hugo Nielsen's (DK, 1974) paintings and sculptures stimulate the imagination with organic forms that viewers can interpret in their own way. Nielsen's paintings are often reflections of his immediate surroundings: landscapes of spectacular coastlines, rolling hills and setting suns. They depict compelling atmospheric images that are raw and direct in their material execution, yet soft and refined in their colours and compositions. In this respect, he follows a Scandinavian expressionist tradition in which colour and light are very important.

Nielsen's sculptures take us deeper into a dreamlike world constructed from surrealistic forms. In his work, materials such as wood and stone have a hard, earthy appearance. This contrasts with the softer, more fragile quality of papier-mâché and plaster, which Nielsen paints over in pastel shades. This play with contrasts results in stimulating works of art that you can lose yourself in for a long time.
